October in Houston

Fall has arrived at the Manor. Here is what is happening around town from October 21 to 28, plus a few of my favorite Montrose spots.

Spooky season takes over the city

Halloween falls on Saturday, October 31, and the whole city is celebrating all week. Zoo Boo is running at the Houston Zoo with pumpkins, scarecrows and Halloween fun in Hermann Park. Giant glowing skeletons line Main Street downtown for Illuminated Calacas, best after dark. Spooky boat tours float down Buffalo Bayou starting Friday, and the Pumpkin Festival at Discovery Green has rides and fall photo ops.

This week at a glance

Wednesday, October 21: Rockets vs. Mavericks at Toyota Center, and Vince Staples at Bayou Music Center.

Thursday, October 22: Free Thursday at the Museum of Fine Arts, and Movies Under the Stars.

Friday, October 23: Don Omar in concert and the Mediterranean Festival.

Saturday, October 24: the Dia de los Muertos Parade at Hidalgo Park, HTX Diwali at POST Houston, and Dynamo vs. Minnesota United.

Sunday, October 25: Texans vs. Giants, plus the free Howl-O-Ween Dog Parade at Levy Park.

Monday through Wednesday: Rockets vs. Hawks, Teddy Swims, and Dave Chappelle.

Times change, so double-check before you head out.

The weather

Sunny and warm, with highs from 80 to 87 and lows in the 60s. Patio weather through Tuesday, with rain likely on Wednesday, October 28. Pack an umbrella.

My Montrose favorites

Breakfast at Baby Barnaby’s, and try the artichoke scramble. Creative, high-end sushi at Uchi, so book ahead. Cheesy enchiladas at Tony’s, and fair warning about the margarita pitchers. Fajitas at Ninfa’s, the 1973 original. Coffee at Agora or Campesino Coffee House. And a walk around the Rice University Loop, a shaded 2.9-mile trail under big oaks.

Did you know?

Montrose dates back to 1911, when developer J.W. Link laid out the neighborhood. His grand Link-Lee Mansion still stands on Montrose Boulevard.
